Parashat Vayeitzei
Lower-right is a bunch of rocks, that either represent the rocks (plural) that Yaakov put around his head, which later became a single rock left-below-middle, or the pile of rocks Yaakov and Lavan used as the sign of their covenant. The single rock is either the one just referred to, or the rock that Yaakov raised as aMATZEIVA at the end of the sedra. The ladder is from Yaakov's dream. The compass indicates the promise of UFARATZTA, and you will spread out... It is interesting to note that Avraham was sent to Eretz Yisrael, Yitzchak was required to remain there, but Yaakov spread far and wide. The 10% is the MASER that Yaakov promisedto G-d. The plant under the 10% is MANDRAKE, the usual translation of DUDA'IM. The baby carriages along the left side represent the 11 sons of Yaakov born in Vayeitzei. The carrige at the bottom and a bit to the right is Dina's. The rods on the right are what Yaakov used to thwart Lavan's attempts to cheat him. The helpproduce the unusual births of the sheep and goats with different properties that they parents, e.g. the spotted, striped, and solid sheep in the PIX. The ice cream in the upper right is based on the Targum of KERACH, which is G'LIDA. If you are working these pictures with children, try to get them to find the word in Onkeles. Interesting, that modern Hebrew uses an Aramaic word for ice cream. The switch at the bottom is for Yaakovs comment about his wages being repeatedly switch. Last week we asked readers' opinions about advertising JEWISH LABOR. Responses covered a wide range of opinions and a wide range of reasons within each point of view. I hope to report on the feedback in next week's Torah Tidbits. You are still welcome to comment on the subject. [The ParshaPix Index][The Vayeitzei Homepage] |
