WORD OF THE MONTH

A weekly feature of Torah Tidbits to help clarify practical and conceptual aspects of the Jewish Calendar, thereby better fulfilling the mitzva of HaChodesh HaZeh Lachem...

This Shabbat, we bench Rosh Chodesh Adar 2.

ROSH CHODESH ADAR SHENI Y'H'YEH B'YOM SHLISHI U'R'VI'I HABA ALEINU V'AL KOL YISRA'EL L'TOVA

The Molad will occur on Sunday, 20h 8m 15p.

Rambam's notation for the Molad would be Yom Sheni, 2 hours, 159 chalakim. (Rambam starts counting hours of the day from 6:00pm rather than midnight, so 8:00pm is 2 hours. Also, Rambam does not use minutes with 18 chalakim each, but rather he divides the hour into 1080 parts, so 8m 15p is 8x18+15=159.)

This announced Molad is based on average calculation and corresponds to 7:48pm on Sunday evening. The actual Molad will be Monday 7:16am. The Moon, being less than 12 hours old at sunset on Monday, will not be visible. In the time of Sanhedrin, Tuesday would not be Rosh Chodesh. Wednesday would be. That's a match with our second day of Rosh Chodesh, the first day of Adar (Sheni). First Kiddush L'vana is Thu. night, March 9th.

The year 5760 is coded DALET-DALET for the Arba Parshiyot. Meaning that Rosh Chodesh Adar Sheni (the second day, which is the first of the month) is on a Wednesday, and that the 4th of Adar (next Shabbat) is a HAFSAKA, a break in the sequence of the Parshiyot.
