[25 Adar] King of France orders the detention for ransom of all Jews in Paris attending shul on Shabbat, 1181. Jews of Strasbourg burned at the Jewish cemetery, 1349. Petition circulated among prominent Americans (not Jews) requesting U.S. government aid to reestablish a sovereign Jewish state in Eretz Yisrael, 1891. (Imagine if it would have borne fruit!)

[March 2] Several thousand Jews of the Minsk ghetto were killed by the Nazis, 1942. Peasants Day in Burma. HBNC, '51.

[26 Adar] The Jewish community of Newport, R.I. bought land for burial, 1677. (New Jewish communities always were concerned about a shul, school, and cemetery. It seems that cemeteries often came before shuls and schools - strange.)

[March 3] Follow this: Dr. Jacob Lumbrozo, 1st Jew in Maryland had been indicted on charges of blasphemy, a capital offense for quite a while after American independence, let alone before. He was given amnesty in 1658 when Cromwell came to office. David Emmanuel, first Jewish Governor in the United States, (Georgia) was sworn in, 1801. The Jewish infintry brigade became active, 1945.

[27 Adar] Tzidkiyahu HaMelech, last King of Judea, died in Babylonian captivity, 561B.C.E. Jews massacred in England, 1190. King of Austria grants favorable rights to Jews, 1255.

[March 4] Israel, in compliance with the United Nations resolution, withdrew from the Gaza Strip and other territories, 1957. Jews of Lubeck, Germany, were expelled, 1699. First permanent Government of Israel assumed office, 1949. Austrian Jews granted equal civil and political rights, 1849. A Christian in Alsace was punished by the Church for lighting a fire for a Jew on Shabbat, 1791. Vivaldi's b.d. 1678.

[28 Adar] Antiochus V granted religious freedom and autonomy to the Jews of Eretz Yisrael, 163B.C.E. Date was celebrated as a holiday marking the cancellation of decrees prohibiting circumcision, Torah study and Shabbat observance. Jews of Prussia were granted rights, 1277.

[March 5] German elections, 1933 gave Nazis control of the Reichstag. Stallin died, 1953 disrupting plans for mass deportations of Russian Jews. Jewish grand vizier under the mongols of Persia was assassinated, 1291. Independence Day in Equatorial Guinea.

[29 Adar] Jews of Austria were required by law to belong to the government-established religious community in their town, 1890 (this is an example of government interference in Jewish communal life.)

[March 6] The Nazis bar Jewish physicians from treating Aryans and vice-versa, 1940. Napoleon captured the city of Jaffa, 1799.

[30 Adar] Only Adar Rishon (in a 13-month year, of course) can have 30 days, in our fixed calendar. Headquarters of the Jewish Agency in Jerusalem was bombed, resulting in the death of may Jews, 1948.

[March 7] Turkish soldiers killed 60 Jews in Bucharest, 1822. Aristotle died, 322BCE.

[1 Adar] Beginning of the 9th plague, Darkness. Yahrzeit of Avraham Ibn Ezra, 1164.

[March 8] Jews of Gloucher were massacred by Ukranians, 1918. Youth Day in Zambia.

[2 Adar] Anti-Jewish riots in Cracow, 1682. Greek Jews from Solonika transported to Nazi extermination camps, 1943. (of 50,000 Jews in Solonika, only 1,200 survived the Holocaust.) Knesset bill defining a Jew as one born to a Jewish mother or one converted to Judaism, 1970. (30 years later, there are still fights over the definition.)

[March 9] The Pope orders the burning of the Talmud, 1244. Jews of Carinthia, Austria were expelled, 1496 (and not readmitted until 1848).
