Torah Tidbits in the PALM of your hand - Technology serving Torah

If you have a Palm™ handheld device and would like to read Torah Tidbits on it, you can download a Palm-version of TT from the Torah Tidbits webpage, www.ou.org/torah/tt. Once the file (.prc or .pdb) is on your computer, you can hotsync it into your Palm. It can then be read with any of the many document readers available. TealDoc is recommended, because the file and its bookmarks are prepared with TealDoc. Rich Reader reads the documents well, too, as does CSpotRun (but without bookmarks). If you need help with the procedures of downloading and/or hotsyncing, contact Phil at the Israel Center (500-3333 ext. 207) or email to tt@ou.org.

If you would like to receive the TT-Palm version each week by email, rather than your going through the website, send me an email message and I'll add you to our growing Palm-list.

One of these days, B"N, we'll AvantGo the TT pages.

Check out www.pilotyid.com and www.penticon.com. for Jewish "stuff" for the Palm.

Correction. Last week's column said that Penticon's Luach requires Hebrew support. It doesn't. If your Palm does not have Hebrew, Luach automatically operates in its English mode. And, even if you do have Hebrew, you can switch Luach to English, if you'd prefer it that way. Call up the program on your Palm, tap the menu button, the lower of the two buttons to the left of the Graffiti rectangle (this works only from the "title Page" of Luach). Tap on Options to pull down the menu (if it isn't already down) and tap Preferences. You can then choose Hebrew-English or English only. You also can set Luach to show Holidays based on Israel or Chutz LaAretz. You can also set preferences for the Z'manim. For example, Sof Z'man Kriyat Shma can be presented according to the Vilna Gaon or the Magen Avraham. A nice touch. Similarly, candle lighting for Shabbat can be set to match local custom. Jerusalem's 40 minutes before sunset time is automatic, if you are set for Jerusalem, but other locations might need adjusting, e.g. 18 minutes, 20, 22, 30, 40. Daylight savings time can be turned on and off manually, or it can be set on automatic. Tell you next week how to handle DST. (That's if for now. Thanks Howie.)
