Word of the Month

Sukkot & Simchat Torah

A weekly feature of Torah Tidbits to help clarify practical and conceptual aspects of the Jewish Calendar, thereby better fulfilling the mitzva of HaChodesh HaZeh Lachem...

Kiddush L'vana for Tishrei 5760.

Here's the rest of the story. The Molad of Tishrei was on Friday, Erev Rosh HaShana (September 10th) at 3:23½pm.

Some people said Kiddush L'vana on Monday night after Tzom Gedaliya (or on one of the following nights), in accordance with "Minhag Yerushalayim", which is to seize the firast opportunity after 3 full days have past since the Molad.

Most people (a guess) follow the tradition of saying KL after Yom Kippur.

So by now, just about everyone who says KL has already said it for this month.

But, in case you haven't, and would like to perform this special mitzva which is considered as "greeting the Divine Presence" - here's the scoop on the latest time KL can be said this month.

Adding 14d 18h 22m (half of a lunation - the time from one Molad to the next) to the Molad, we get to Shabbat morning (first day of Sukkot) at 9:45. Generally, we do not say K.L. on Shabbat or Yom Tov. But if the last opportunity falls on Friday night, and one hasn't been able to say K.L. previously, then GO FOR IT.
