Parashat Pinchas

The DOVE over the SPEAR is a reminder of the irony, that the a violent act of

Pinchas was rewarded by the Covenant of SHALOM. When violence is necessary, it is not automatically negative.

The CHOSHEN is the symbol of the KEHUNA, which is what Pinchas received. Aharon and his four sons were anointed as kohanim. After that, anyone born to a kohen is a kohen by birth. The only one who was neither anointed nor born of a kohen was Pinchas (who was already born when his father, uncles, and grandfather were anointed). As such, Pinchas (and his offspring) were "originally" not going to be kohanim. This was G-d's reward to Pinchas for his zealous act.

The broken hook stands for the broken VAV in the word SHALOM.

The little hand is a small YAD. Sound alike, the small YOD in the name Pinchas. FYI, every appearance of the name Pinchas in Tanach - both for ben Elazar ben Aharon HaKohen and for ben ELI HaKohen (brother of Chofni) - is spelled with a YUD, except once and a half. The son of ELI is referred to once without the YUD, and the son of Elazar is written with a small YUD at the beginning of the sedra that bears his name. On the other hand, for people with that name, it is more common than not to spell Pinchas without the YUD. (The sequence of letters PEI-NUN- CHET-SAMACH also appears as part of a place-name TACHPANCHEIS.)

The calculator is for the counting of the people.

The five girls are the daughters of Zelafchad.

The two lambs are for the T'MIDIM and/or the MUSAFIM of Shabbat. The computer terminal is a MOSAF in Hebrew, play on words of MUSAF.

SHOFAR is one of the mitzvot from the sedra.

Binoculars are for Moshe to look out over the land, as G-d commands him in this sedra.
