Parashat No'ach A weekly feature of Torah Tidbits to help clarify practical and conceptual aspects of the Jewish Calendar, thereby better fulfilling the mitzva of HaChodesh HaZeh Lachem... Trivia with a point - thanks to Aviva Ch. Of all 54 sedras in the Torah, only B'reishit is ALWAYS Shabbat Mevorchim. That's the piece of Jewish trivia. And here is the point. Rabbi Yitzchak (as quoted in the Torah's first Rashi) mentions that the Torah, as a Book of mitzvot for Bnei Yisrael, ought to have begun with HACHODESH HAZEH LACHEM. For various other reasons,it starts "In the Beginning". But, on the very same Shabbat that we begin the cycle of weekly Torah portions, we also perform the custom of commemorating the mitzva of HACHODESH HAZEH, which is what Rosh Chodesh Benching is all about. The Molad of Tishrei was Sunday morning. Three days later is Wednesday morning. First opportunity to say Kiddush L'vana is/was Wednesday night, October 13th. Those who wait until Motza'ei Shabbat have an ideally "early" Motza'ei Shabbat this week, October 16th. Those who wait a full 7 days after the Molad will have their first opportunity on Sunday, the 17th. If you are not a regular KL sayer, we highly recommend it. It's a special mitzva, filled with extra meaning. [The No'ach Homepage] |
