  • Nazis murdered the male Jews of Drobian, Lithuania, 1941.
  • Crusaders massacred the Jews of Mehr, 1096.

  • End of Miriam's confinement in the Midbar.
  • The Romans stormed the Samaritan stronghold on Har Gerizim and killed 11,600 people, 67ce.
  • Rabbi Chanina b. T'radyon, one of Asara Harugei Malchut, was burned at the stake. Rabbi Akiva was imprisoned. 132ce.
  • Second expulsion of Jews from France, 1322.
  • Purim of Florence, celebrating escape from massacre, 1790.
  • Memorial day for Lithuanian Jewry.

  • In 1294, the Jewish community of Berne, Switzerland forfeited all financial claims against non-Jews, and then were expelled from the country.
  • The Jewish comminuty of Morgentheim, Austria was massacred, 1298.
  • Henry Ford retracted and apologized for the publication of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, 1927.
  • The last British armed forces left Israel, 1948.

  • Russian Jews granted permission to print Jewish books, 1862.
  • Pogrom in Jassy, the cradle of Rumanian anti-Semitism claimed 5000 Jewish lives, 1941.
  • First Jew to lose his life in the American Revolution, 1776.
  • Sir Herbert Samuel became first British High-Commissioner of Palestine, 1920. (The dedication of what street took place in his presence?)
  • Jews of Lithuania received a Charter of Privilege, 1388.

  • Moshe sent the Meraglim to survey Eretz Yisrael. (Of which Jews in Chutz LaAretz read on the day before - this year).
  • Follow the contrast: Chovevei Tzion was founded in America, 1897. Six years later, same date, Russia banned all Zionist meetings, 1903.
  • Germany occupied Kovno and Vilna, 1941.

  • Nazi-instigated pogrom claimed many Jewish lives in Lvov, 1941.
  • Chumash with Ramban first published in 1490.

  • Residence tax on Hungarian Jews was abolished, 1846.
  • Numerous Jews were killed in a pogrom at Jassy, Rumania, 1941.

  • Yaakov and family went down to Mitzrayim (according to one source. This would be the establishment of the first voluntary Jewish settlement outside of Eretz Yisrael).
  • Many Jews were killed by a riotous mob in Seville, 1391. The riots spread throughout Spain.
  • Yahrzeit of Rabbi Shlomo Kluger, 1869.
  • Massacre of 2300 Lithuanian Jews by Lithuanians, 1941.

  • Pogrom in Kielce, Poland, first post Nazi massacre of the Jews, 1946.
  • Catherine II of Russia restricted the area where Jews were permitted to trade, 1794.
  • RAID AT ENTEBBE, 1976.
  • The non-Jewish owner of a building used as a shul was burned at the stake, 1632.
  • American Independence was declared on 17th of Tammuz, 1776.
  • 41 Jews were burned at the stake in Brelau, 1453. The remainder of the Jewish population was expelled.

  • Rabbi Shmuel b. Yechiel of Cologne was killed by Crusaders, 1096. Earthquake hits Eretz yisrael, 1927.

  • The then 50-year old Jewish community of the Belgian Congo, consisting of 2500 Jews fled in the wake of riots which followed independence, 1960.
  • The Knesset passed a law granting every Jew the absolute right to settle in Israel, 1950.
  • The Pope decreed against blood-ritual charges, 1247. (It seems that the decree was ignored.)
  • Another pope banned forced baptisim of Jews, 1345. (This decree was overturned by subsequent pope's in 1597 and 1747 - and probably by others at other times as well.)

  • Yehoshua "commanded" the Sun and the Moon to stand still.
  • Here's a repeat from last week (its secular date - this is commonly done in this column, but mention is being made now to focus attention at what might strike you as absurd, and yet...): Rabbi Menashe b. Yisrael petitioned for permission to practice Judaism in England. Permission was granted by the Council of State, 1656.
  • Yahrzeit of Rabbi Bernard Illowy, 1871. A staunch opponent of the Reform movement, he was the first Orthodox rabbi with a PhD from Europe to settle in the U.S.
  • 1500 Jews of Kovno and 11,000 Jews in Kishinev were killed, 1941.

  • President Roosevelt called for an international conference to consider the "displaced persons" problem, 1938. The negligible results highlight the passive role the Western world in the face of the Nazis.
  • The first 14 members of BILU arrived at Yaffa port, 1882.
  • Bendin (Poland) ghetto uprising, 1942.
