[18 Adar] What state in the U.S. had the first Jewish governor? Georgia. 1801, David Emmanuel was sworn in. Another first in America for Adar 18 - first Anglo-Jewish periodical, 1823, with the "politically impolite" name, The Jew. Napoleon suspended the emancipation of Jews under French rule for 10 years, 1808. Jews of Smyrna, Turkey were attacked by Greeks charging the Jews with ritual murder, 1901.

[February 24] The Struma with 769 illegal Jewish immigrants was torpedoed by a Nazi submarine, 1942.

[19 Adar] Capture of Ein Gedi by Israel, 1949, brought to an end the mlitary engagements of the War of Independence.

[February 25] Pope banned all social contact between Jews and Christians, 1451. This was because of the fear of Christians being attracted to Judaism. A Christian who converted to Judaism and the Jews who helped him were usually subject to the death penalty in most Catholic and Eastern Orthodox countries. [Amazing that with the Church's attitude towards Judaism, and with the contempt that Jews were held in, that there should be such a fear of "Jewish missionizing".] Renoir's b.d. 1841.

[20 Adar] Choni Ha'M'agel's prayer for rain was answered. Private Purim of the Jews of Frankfort, from 1616, in celebration of the execution of Vincent Fettmilch. Yahrzeit of the Ba"Ch, major commentator on the Shulchan Aruch, 1640.

[February 26] Crusader massacre of the Jews of Wurtzburg, 1147. Jews of the Papal States (except for Rome and Ancona) were expelled by the pope, 1569. Maryland removed the requirement of a Christian oath for public office, and substituted a declaration of belief in reward and punishment and the World to Come. 1825. Levi Eshkol died, 1969.

[21 Adar] Purim of Narbonne, oldest private Purim on record, commemorated the community's escape from a mob, 1236. Yahrzeit of the No'am Elimelech, 1787. Yahrzeit of Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor, 1896

[February 27] Jews of Austria expelled, 1670. First Maccabia games in Israel, 1932. Egypt and Israel exchanged ambassadors, 1980

[22 Adar] Massacre of the Jews of Uberlingen, Switzerland, 1349. Yahrzeit of the Aruch HaShulchan, Rabbi Yechiel Michal HaLavi Epstein, 1908.

[February 28] Rumania excluded Jews from public service (and the tobacco trade), 1887. MacDonald White Paper, 1940, included restriction of sale of Arab land to Jews in Eretz Yisrael. This document nearly voided the Balfour Declaration

[23 Adar] Massacre of the Jews of Estella, Spain, 1328. Yahrzeit of the Chidushei HaRim, first Gerer Rebbe, 1866.

[February 29] An earthquake in Agadir, Morocco killed 5000 people, including hundreds of Jews, 1960.

[24 Adar] Jews of Gluchor massacred by Ukrainian mob, 1918. German troops marched into Prague, 1939. Germany occupied Hungary, 1944. YHS, NC, 5711.

[March 1] First organized Arab attack on a Jewish settlement in Eretz Yisrael, 1886, against Petach Tikva. Hitler ordered the establishment of a library of Jewish books and art, 1942. (The U.S. army recovered 600,000 volumes intact.)

[25 Adar] King of France orders the detention for ransom of all Jews in Paris attending shul on Shabbat, 1181. Jews of Strasbourg burned at the Jewish cemetery, 1349. Petition circulated among prominent Americans (not Jews) requesting U.S. government aid to reestablish a sovereign Jewish state in Eretz Yisrael, 1891. (Imagine if it would have borne fruit!)

[March 2] Several thousand Jews of the Minsk ghetto were killed by the Nazis, 1942. Peasants Day in Burma. HBNC, '51.
