Word of the Month

Parashat Chayei Sara

A weekly feature of Torah Tidbits to help clarify practical and conceptual aspects of the Jewish Calendar, thereby better fulfilling the mitzva of HaChodesh HaZeh Lachem...

This Shabbat, we bench Rosh Chodesh Kislev, which will be IY"H on Tuesday and Wednesday

The molad will be MON 17h 12m 11p. In Rambam notation (which counts hours of the day from 6:00pm the evening before, and which does not use minutes, but rather hours of 1080 chalakim) it would be YOM SHENI 23 hours and 227p.

Which is 4:52pm Israel time on Mon. NOV 8th.

The actual Molad will be about 11 hours earlier, at 5:53am, early monday morning.

Earliest K.L. will be Thursday night, NOV 11th. Most people will wait until Motza"Sh To'l'dot.

First day of Rosh Chodesh is 30 Cheshvan, a date which exists in about 45% of the years. Years with a 30 Cheshvan are called SHALEIM and have either 355 or 385 days. Rosh Chodesh Kislev can be SUN, SUN/MON, TUE, TUE/WED, THU, THU/FRI, FRI - never on SHABBAT.
