[27 Tishrei] The wealthy Jewish community of Venice was sacked and impoverished, 1570. (That the success of Jews irks our non-Jewish neighbors goes all the way back to Yitzchak Avinu and the people of Gerar.) The town of Netanya was founded, 1927. (It is named after the same person that the street on which the Israel Centeris located is named after.) Operation Hiram was successfully completed, giving Israel effective control of the Galil, 1948.

[October 7] Germany decreed that passports of Jews were to be marked with a J, 1939. Hundreds of Jews in Cracow were killed during Hakafot, 1555.

[28 Tishrei] The fourth Rabban Gamliel was removed from office by the Romans, thereby ending the last vestiges of Jewish autonomy, 415. Saladin captured Jerusalem from the Crusaders, and allowed Jews to return to the City after an absence of 88 years, 1187. The British White Paper, restricting Jewish immigration and purchaseof land was published, 1930.

[October 8] Nazi pogrom against the Jews of Lodz, 1939.

[29 Tishrei] Traditional Yahrzeit of Shimon HaTzadik. (His Kever is in Jerusalem and makes a meaningful short tiyul.) Jews of Lower Bavaria expelled, 1450. Yahrzeit of the Abrabanel, 1508. Deadline for Warsaw's Jews to move into the ghetto, 1940. Last transport of Austrian Jews left for Theresienstadt, 1942.

[October 9] Major attack in the Negev by Egypt, 1948. Alexander I appointed a commission to help improve Jewish life in Russia, 1802. Israeli navy acquired its first submarine, 1958. Casimir III of Poland renews Jewish privileges, 1334.

[30 Tishrei] Israeli forces trap the Egyptian 3rd army on the eastern side of the Suez during the Yom Kippur War, 1973.

[October 10] Jews of Tunis and Tripoli massacred, 1864. Sh'chita banned in Italy, 1938.

[1 MarCheshvan] Biblical plague of Dever. The seventh and last of the Crusades ended, 1270. Rabbi Yehuda HaChasid arrived in Jerusalem, 1700. He died 3 days later. A shul was built on land he had purchased for that purpose, and was named for him. The Arabs burned the shul in 1720. It was rebuilt in 1837 and destroyed bythe Arabs again in 1948. Today it is known as the Hurva.

[October 11] 180 Jews killed in Munich, 1285.

[2 MarCheshvan] Purim Mo'ed Katan celebrated by Jews in Persia who escaped forced conversions. Pogrom in Odessa took 300 Jewish lives, 1905. Mir Yeshiva was forced to close its doors after 124 years, 1939. Today, B"H, it is alive and well in Jerusalem. Nazis executed 10,000 Vilna Jews, 1941.

[October 12] First Jewish deportees left Vienna and Bohemia, 1939. Columbus discovered in America, 1492.3,400 Jews of Galicia executed by Nazis, 1941.Decorating the outside of a shul was forbidden in Sicily, 1366.

[3 MarCheshvan] King Cyrus of Persia formally occupied Babylon, 579 b.c.e. Last of 16,000 Jews of England expelled by King Edward I left, 1290. Germany occupied Kharkov - 20,000 Jews fall into Nazi hands, 1941.

[October 13] Censorship of Jewish books in Russia, 1796. Jordan entered the Yom Kippur war, 1973. Eliezer Ben Yehuda and friends decide to speak Hebrew exclusively, marking the beginning of the revival of the language in modern times, 1881.

[4 MarCheshvan] Rambam reached Jerusalem, 1165 - celebrate date as a private festival. Yahrzeit of R. Yehuda HaChasid, leader of a large Ashkenazi Aliya, 1700. Rumanian soldiers massacre 26,000 Jews of Odessa, '41. Nazis liquidate Riga ghetto, 1943.

[October 14] JFoundation stone of the Knesset laid, 1958. Major fighting between Egypt and Israel resumed, 1948. Nazi plan for ghettoizing Jews in all big cities announced by Goering, 1938.Episcopal Church cleared Jews of the charge of killing Jesus, 1964.
