Parashat Bhaaloscha

A weekly feature of Torah Tidbits to help clarify practical and conceptual aspects of the Jewish Calendar, thereby better fulfilling the mitzva of HaChodesh HaZeh Lachem...

Follow this, please. It isn't just for the numbers. Molad of Sivan was Friday morning, June 2nd. Deadline for Kidush L'vana is 14d 18h 22m after the Molad. That comes to this Shabbat morning at 5:22 (which is a few minutes before sunrise). This means that Friday night, all night long, is still K.L. time. We usually don't say K.L. on Friday night (or Yom Tov). But when it is the last opportunity, it is allowed. So that's one point. One can say K.L. on Leil Shabbat - when it is the last chance to say it.

Another point. Full Moon will be at 1:26:30am, middle of Friday night. Can one say K.L. at - let's say - 3:00am? The answer is YES. Really, K.L. is said as the Moon is increasing in brightness, and not when it starts to wane. And the moment when the Moon stops waxing at full Moon. So 1:26:30 should really be the deadline. However, we do not use astronomical times to determine the period for K.L. We use the announced time of the Molad which is based on average.

Obviously, one should have said K.L. long before this Leil Shabbat. But this was a glimpse into the way Chazal set the details for K.L.
