Word of the Month

Parshat Yitro

A weekly feature of Torah Tidbits to help clarify practical and conceptual aspects of the Jewish Calendar, thereby better fulfilling the mitzva of HaChodesh HaZeh Lachem...

In the second half of a month, there is no Moon at sunset. As the days proceed towards the end of the month, less and less of the Moon rises later and later into the night, until the invisible Moon rises around the time the Sun does. That will be around the time of the Molad. Beginning of the night at this time of the monthis good for star-watching, without interference from the Moon. Winter nights are colder (of course) than Summer nights, but you get to see more stars, starting earlier in the evening, so if the sky is clear, enjoy some of the wonders of Creation. If you see a shooting star, remember to say a bracha.
