Last Week's PPP (Vayeitzei)

ParshaPix Puzzle

TT342PPP VAYEITZEI
[1] Upper-left. It's a KIPA, a.k.a. yarmulka, and a few other names. I know this is a groaner, but I also know that a few people already got it. It stands for the opening words of the sedra, based on the well-known old line: How do we know that Yaakov Avinu wore a kipa? Because it says, VAYEITZEI YAAKOV and Yaakov wentout... would Yaakov Avinu go out without a kipa? Good old-fashion circular reasoning, but this one is a classic.

[2] Below the kipa is a sleeping garlic, which stands for VAYALEN SHUM...

[3] Below that is the Torah Tidbits logo with a school-mark of B, which is GOOD. Therefore, we have TOV T.T. it is good that I give her (Rachel) to you (Yaakov), than to another man. Not the most enthusiastic answer a prospective father-in-law could give to his future son-in-law when he asks for his daughter's hand in marriage.

[4] Top-right, a barber pole with STRIPES and a bowtie with DOTS, representing two patterns of goats which were part of that whole con-fusing and complicated portion of Yaakov's compensation from Lavan. The As and the Mwere supposed to be the plural of EIZ, as in Izim, in which case, it should have been EEEEEM.

[5] The cartoon character below the barber pole, etc. is MANDRAKE THE MAGICIAN. Hence, mandrake, as in DUDA'IM, as in Reuven picking them for his mother and Rachel asking for them, etc.

[6] Lower-right is Sammy Sosa on the baseball field, a cub in the field, a B'EIR BASADEH. Sorry, but it did give me a baseball element three weeks in a row, so far.

THE PPP-SOLUTIONS REPORT...
Mike M (Bklyn) hit [2,4,5] and tries on the other ones, nice one for [6]. ES hit [2] with [1] thrown in, since Yaakov obviously wore a kipa when he davened Maariv. Credit for [4]. Nice try on [6]. Benjietc. hit [1,2,3], nice variant for [4], VAYISAPEIR LAVAN... he got a haircut. Of course the bowtie fits in well... And several nice tries for Sammy.

MHMER? gets credit for [2,4] and a few additional nice tries, including the MAKEIL that Sammy Sosa is swinging. DM phoned in an interesting sol'n set. It's a good example of the different directions that people's minds take. E.g. he saw an onion, not garlic, and attached the B to get B'ONYI (of Reuven's naming). He saw Mandrake as a comic book detective and came up with NICHASHTI. He saw the bowtie and what looked like a symbol for frequencies below it and came up with OLIM V'YORDIM (as in variable frequencies) BO. And he identified Sosa andrelated it the the letters SIN-SIN in the name Yissachar. Not exactly what I had in mind, but a fun try nonetheless.

Note: If you email or fax your PPP solutions, please include your address and phone number. Thank you.
