[9 Av] Decree against the adult male population of the Exodus Generation. More than 15,000 died each year of the Wandering, on Tish'a b'Av. Nevuzaradan set fire to the first Beit HaMikdash, 586 b.c.e. The Romans destroyed the second Beit HaMikdash, 70. The Romans plowed up Har haBayit to use it for a Roman colony, 71. Betar,last independent outpost under Bar Kochba fell to the Romans, 135. King Edward I of England ordered expulsion of all Jews, 1290 (thought it was Spain's idea?) Period of expulsion from Spain began, 1492. Yahrzeit of the Chozeh miLublin, 1815. Hungary's Jews emancipated, 1849. Petach Tikva was founded, 1878. World War Ibroke out, 1914.

[July 22] 200 Jews killed in Beziers, France, 1209.

[10 Av] Birthday of Yissachar (He'd be 3563 years old if he were still alive). First Beit HaMikdash was destroyed. Jews of France arrested and ordered to leave the country, 1306. Hundreds of Jews of Catalonia murdered, 1358. Columbus set sail, 1492 (In his diary, CC referred to the departure of Jews from Spain on the sameday as his voyage began). Jews of Rome ghettoized, 1555.

[July 23] Arabs take control of most of Eretz Yisrael from the Byzantine, battle of Yarmuk, 636. Rehovot attacked by Arabs, 1913. Jews of Austria ordered to take family names, 1787. Prussian Jews granted equality, 1847. Violent earthquake destroys city of Acco, 501.

[11 Av] Anti-Jewish riots in Arnstadt, Germany, 1264. Anti-Jewish riots in Breslau, Poland 1360.; Edict of expulsion from Bohemia was revoked by Empress, 1748. Jews of Bohemia who volunteered for service in the army were allowed to marry, beyond the quota on Jewish marriages, 1796. (Get the point here - there was a quotaon how many Jews can get married.) Arabs blew up Latrun pumping station, cutting off Jerusalem's water supply, 1948.

[July 24] Jews of Frankfort perish in Black Death massacres, 1349. Cornerstone was laid for Hebrew University, 1918. British Mandate confirmed by League of Nations, 1922.

[12 Av] Famous disputation between Ramban and Pablo Christiani opened, 1263. 38 Jews burned at the stake in Berlin, 1510. Russian army liberated Kovno, 1944.

[July 25] Jews of Hebron attacked, 1835. Jewish community of Vienna expelled 1670.

[13 Av] Jews of Wurzburg, Germany massacred, 1298. Yahrzeit of Sir Moses Montefiore, 1885. A handful of survivors of the Kovno ghetto emerge from hiding, 1944.

[July 26] The Inquisition was established in Rome, 1267. Last victim of the Inquisition (Spain & Portugal) was executed 1826.

[14 Av] Another pope forbids blood-accusations against the Jews, 1272 (one of several, but with little effect). The next pope requires Jews to hear conversion-sermons, 1278. 407 Jews of Zhitomir executed by Nazis 1941. 10,000 Jews of Minsk wiped out by Nazis, 1942.

[July 27] Plane bound for Israel was shot down by Bulgaria, 1955, at a loss of 58 lives. New Zealand recognized Israel, 1950

[15 Av] Dying out of the Wilderness Generation ended. Inter-Shevet marriages permitted (having been erroneously thought to be forbidden). Men of Binyamin were allowed to marry women from of other sh'vatim, ending a previously imposed ban. See TU b'AV tidbit for more. Jews of Great Poland were given permission to elect achief rabbi, 1541. Jewish community in Cochin received large shipment of religious articles from the Jews of Amsterdam, and declared the date as a holiday, 1686. Baron Lionel de Rothschild became first Jew in British Parliament, 1858, after his oath was changed to omit reference to Christianity.

[July 28] Chmelnicki hordes attack Vilna killing many Jews, 1655.

[16 Av] Theological Seminary was opened in Breslau (now Wroclaw, Poland), 1854, four hundred years after Breslau's Jews were banned from the city "forever". The seminary was destroyed by the Nazis in 1938.

[July 29] Beginning of mass immigration of Eastern European Jewry to the United States, 1881.
