Word of the Month

Parashat Sh'lach

A weekly feature of Torah Tidbits to help clarify practical and conceptual aspects of the Jewish Calendar, thereby better fulfilling the mitzva of HaChodesh HaZeh Lachem...

This is one of those weeks - no K.L. to remind you about, no Molad business to explain, next week is Mevorchim - so let's look at the names of the months.

A search of Tanach revealed the following:

Nissan is identified as the first month in the book of Esther; it is mentioned in Nechemia.

Iyar is not mentioned, but the second month is called ZIV in Melachim.

Sivan is identified as the 3rd month in Esther.

Tammuz (the month, that is) and Av are not named in Tanach.

Elul appears in Nechemia, but not numbered.

Tishrei is not mentioned.

Neither is (Mar)Cheshvan, but the 8th month is identified as BUL in Melachim.

Kislev is identified in Zecharia and mentioned in Nechemia.

Tevet is identified in Esther.

Shvat is identified in Zecharia.

Adar is identified (and mentioned repeatedly) in Esther, and is also mentioned in the book of Ezra. JTYLTK
