Parshat Ki'Tisa

A weekly feature of Torah Tidbits to help clarify practical and conceptual aspects of the Jewish Calendar, thereby better fulfilling the mitzva of HaChodesh HaZeh Lachem...

Parshat Para is always after Purim; usually it is the following Shabbat (when Purim is Tuesday and Wednesday - as it is this year, or Sunday and Monday), less often there is a "break Shabbat" between Purim and Para (when Purim is Friday and Shabbat or Thursday and Friday). Parshat Para always precedes Parshat HaChodesh;there never is a "break Shabbat" between them.

Parshat Para can fall on the 18th (happens 28.5% of the time - including this year), 20th (32%), 22nd (rarest, 11.5% - goes together with Triple Purim and the Pesach Seder being on Motza'ei Shabbat), or 23rd of Adar (28.0%), in which case it will be M'vorchim.

It can be Maftir for Ki Tisa (as it is this year - most common occurrence, 41.7% of the time), Vayak-hel (very rare, 3.3%), Vayak-hel/P'kudei (18.1%), Tzav (16.3%), or Shmini (20.5%).
