Word of the Month

Parashat Ki Teitzei

A weekly feature of Torah Tidbits to help clarify practical and conceptual aspects of the Jewish Calendar, thereby better fulfilling the mitzva of HaChodesh HaZeh Lachem...

The Molad of Elul (based on average - this is the Molad we announce) was Thursday, early morning, 8p after 3. In Rambam style: Chamishi, 9 hours, 8 chalakim. This corresponds to 3:39:33am Israel Summer Time on Thursday, August 12th.

The actual molad was at 2:08pm on Wednesday afternoon. This particular month we were able to "experience" the Molad of Elul, because of the Solar Eclipse. Nonetheless, we use the Traditional (average) Molad to determine the beginning of Kiddush L'vana (I challenged that for this month, but only in theory) and the deadlinefor K.L. which is definitely not affected by a Solar Eclipse two weeks earlier.

Tachlis: 3-day from the molad people began saying K.L. this past Sunday night. 7-day people can say K.L. from Thursday night, August 19th. Many people of either group will wait until Motza'ei Shabbat of Ki Teitzei. Waiting for Motza'ei Shabbat is popular during the Summer because there is less chance of getting clouded-outof K.L.

Last opportunity for K.L. is 14d 18h 22m after the Molad. That translates to Thursday night, August 26th, but only until 10:00pm Israel Summer Time.
