[16 Av] Theological Seminary was opened in Breslau (now Wroclaw, Poland), 1854, four hundred years after Breslau's Jews were banned from the city "forever". The seminary was destroyed by the Nazis in 1938.

[July 29] Beginning of mass immigration of Eastern European Jewry to the United States, 1881.

[17 Av] Extended Fast of Av, as observed by Falashas, ends. They fast Tammuz 1-10 and Av 1-17, probably deriving from a confusion of the two months. Arabs attack Jews throughout Eretz Yisrael, including the attack on Hebron yeshiva, 1929.

[July 30] Israel shoots down 4 Migs piloted by Russians over Suez, 1970. "Birthday" of modern German anti-Semitism, 1878 (elections gave reactionary element a strong voice in gov't).

[18 Av] Ner Maaravi (Westernmost lamp of the Menora) was extinguished in the days of King Achaz. Ancient fast day. Liquidation of the Bialystok ghetto began, 1943.

[July 31] Ghetto in Florence, Italy established, 1571. Goering "launches" the Final Solution of the Jewish Question, 1941. The one millionth Oleh since Statehood arrives in Israel, 1961.

[19 Av] 200 Jews killed in Beziers, France, 1209. Bar Ilan University founded, 1955.

[August 1] World War I broke out, 1914. ussians liberate Kovno, 1944.

[20 Av] First printed edition of the Zohar, 1558, popularizing the study of Kabbala. Anti-Jewish riots in Hungary, 1883.

[August 2] Hitler becomes head of state and commander-in-chief of the armed forces, making his power absolute, 1934. Armed revolt broke out in Treblinka, 1943. Expulsion of Jews from Spain began, 1492.

[21 Av] Yahrzeit of Rabbi Hayim Soloveichik of Brisk, 1918. Jews of Austria ordered by Nazis to take Israel and Sara as first names, 1938. 24 Yiddish writers executed in Russia, 1952.

[August 3] 15 Jews charged with ritual-murder acquitted, Hungary, 1883. Columbus set sail, 1492.

[22 Av] Violent earthquake in Eretz Yisrael, 501, Acco destroyed. 16 Jews were burned at the stake by Inquisition, 1488.

[August 4] First train with deportees from Belgium to Auschwitz, 1942. 24 Yiddish writers in Russia executed, 1952.

[23 Av] Pogrom in Zhitomir, Russia, 1905. A Russian student who tried to help the Jews was also killed.

[August 5] Anti-Jewish riots in Arnstadt, Germany, 1264. Edict of Expulsion of Bohemian Jewry was revoked,1748. Jews of Barcelona, Spain massacred, 1391.
