 Parshat B'reishit
A weekly feature of Torah Tidbits to
help clarify practical and conceptual aspects of the Jewish Calendar, thereby better
fulfilling the mitzva of HaChodesh HaZeh Lachem...
30 days hath November, April... what about Cheshvan? This year is a FULL year with 355
days. Cheshvan usually has 29 days; it has "an extra day" this year. The months
this year from Tishrei, have 30,30,30,29,30,29,30,29,30,29,30 ,29. All but Cheshvan and
Kislev are fixed in our calendar. A month following a 30-day month has two days Rosh
Chodesh; a month following a 29-day month has one day Rosh Chodesh. The Rosh
Chodeshes follow a neat sequence. With Rosh HaShana beginning on a Monday, the Rosh
Chodeshes of this year are TUE-WED, THU-FRI, SHA-SUN, MON, TUE-WED, THU (that's Nissan,
and the first day of Pesach too), FRI-SHA, SUN, MON-TUE, WED, THU-FRI (that's Elul), which
means that Rosh HaShana 5760 will be SHA (and SUN).
