Word of the Month

Parshat BaMidbar

A weekly feature of Torah Tidbits to help clarify practical and conceptual aspects of the Jewish Calendar, thereby better fulfilling the mitzva of HaChodesh HaZeh Lachem...

Rosh Chodesh Sivan will be Sunday, May 16th. We bench Rosh Chodesh this Shabbat and we read a special Haftara for Erev Rosh Chodesh known as MACHAR CHODESH.

ROSH CHODESH SIVAN Y'H'YEH (MACHAR) B'YOM RISHON HABA ALEINU V'AL KOL YISRAEL L'TOVA.

Moladot come in three flavors. [1] Jerusalem Solar Time of the Molad based on Average, [2] Israel clock time (or wherever else) of the average Molad, and [3] the actual (astronomical) Molad. [1] and [2] are the same time, expressed differently. [3] is a different story. [1] is used for the announcement at M'vorchim, andremains as is all over the world. It does not change from place to place, nor from standard to summer time. [2], which refers to the same time as [1], is adjusted from place to place, and does change when DST is in effect. It is used to determine first and last times for Kiddush Levana. [3] will be used in the time ofSanhedrin when months will be sanctified based on eye-witness testimony. Sivan's Molad: [1] SHA 12h 48m 5p. (Rambam: SHA 18:869)[2] 1:27pm Israel Summer Time, Sha. May 15. [3] Shabbat, May 15th at 3:05pm
