Word of the Month

Parashat Balak

A weekly feature of Torah Tidbits to help clarify practical and conceptual aspects of the Jewish Calendar, thereby better fulfilling the mitzva of HaChodesh HaZeh Lachem...

Earliest Kidush L'vana in Jerusalem (according to the 3-day after Molad opinion) was Thursday night, June 17th. Most people said K.L. this past Motza'ei Shabbat. Others who wait a full 7 days from the Molad, said it on Monday night. At this point, practically all regular K.L. sayers have said it.

So this reminder is for those of you who "aren't into Kiddush L'vana". I think you should give it a try. It is a very special mitzva. It is considered as "welcoming the Divine Presence". That's no small thing. You don't need a minyan for K.L. (although it is preferable to say it among a multitude of people). You can evensay it all by yourself. (In which case, you say Shalom Aleichem - Aleichem Shalom three times.)

Although there are opinions that women don't say K.L., there are also opinions that they are required to. A woman should ask her Rav if she should, could, or shouldn't say it.

Last opportunity this month is 14d 18h 22m after the Molad, which was Monday, June 14, 2:11am. That means that this month's deadline is Monday, June 28th, 8:33pm IST.
