TT readers Louis Goldberg and Raphy Abt each pointed out that it was Louis IX who instituted the Yellow Badge of Shame in 1269, not Louis XIV, as mentioned in the last BHYY column. The error was mine, not the book's.

[22] The Jews of New Amsterdam requested permission (1655) to open a Jewish cemetery. DENIED. One year later (same date), permission was granted. This was the
first Jewish Cemetery in North America.

[23] Crusaders captured Jerusalem in 1099. Chmielnicki hordes killed many Jews in Vilna (1655).

[24] Crusaders gathered the Jews of Jerusalem into a shul and set it alight killing all those inside. For the next 88 years the Crusaders ruled Jerusa lem and all Jews were barred from the City throughout that period. Anti- Jewish riots in Cordova, Spain (1148). Union of Orthodox Rabbis of U.S. & Canada formed (1902). Rabbi Yaakov Josef's (RJJ) yahrzeit. He was viewed as the Chief Rabbi of New York.

[25] The Jews of Lithuania received a Charter of Privilege, 1388. Napolean issued a decree requiring Jews to adopt family names, 1808. This followed, and was followed by similar decrees in other countries. Jews attending the funeral of RJJ were attacked by anti-Jewish rioters.

[26] Yahrzeit of the author of the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch, Rabbi Shlomo Ganzfried. Israeli air force shot down four Russian-piloted MIGs, 1970.

[27] Church decreed that the Jews were doomed to eternal servitude and subjugation, 1205. This was Church Doctrine for over 760 years. Third expulsion of Jews from France, 1322. Baruch Leibov and a Russian naval officer whom he converted to Judaism were both burned at the stake in St. Petersburg, 1738. The crime was conversion to Judaism. Haifa harbor was opened, 1933.

Phil's comment: Say the word EXPULSION to someone and he'll probably answer SPAIN. We should know that we were expelled from many, many countries throughout centuries of our history.

[29] RASHI's 893rd yahrzeit. The entired Jewish male population of Grodz, Lithuania was executed by the Nazis, 1941. Russia claimed that Raoul Wallenberg died on this
date in 1947.
