 Parshat Ki Teitzei
A weekly feature of Torah Tidbits to
help clarify practical and conceptual aspects of the Jewish Calendar, thereby better
fulfilling the mitzva of HaChodesh HaZeh Lachem....
Kiddush L'vana can be said until the midpoint between one Molad and the next. The average
time between successive Moladot is 29d 12h 44m 1p. Half of that amount of time is 14d 18h
22m. The molad of Elul was Shabbat (August 22), 6:51pm Israel Summer Time. Adding two
weeks 18h 22m brings us to Sunday, September 6th at 1:13pm Summertime (which it isn't, on
the 6th). Since we move
the clock back on Motza'ei Shabbat, the deadline in Israel for K.L. this month is 12:13pm
on Sunday. Which means that the last opportunity to say K.L. is all night Motza'ei
Shabbat.
Again, I say that K.L. is a mitzva; K.L. is a bracha; K.L. is
considered "welcoming the Divine Presence". It is a prayer with many Segulot. It
is a joyous reminder of G-d's Creation of and Mastery over the Universe.
If you don't say K.L. on a regular basis, or you say it in an
uninspiring, lackluster manner, let one of your Elul-resolutions be a conscientious and
enthusiastic
attitude & practice of Kiddush L'vana. If you haven't said it yet this month, now's
the time.
