Pirkei Avot

This Shabbat, we read/learn the second chapter. As was
mentioned in past weeks, the Calendar serves as a varied backdrop to the learning of Pirkei Avot, as we go through the four cycles between Pesach and Rosh HaShana. Many of the teachings of these Mishnayot become powerful words of Mussar when read in the middle of the month of Elul.

On this Shabbat of Ki Teitzei, with its 74 mitzvot, when we read Rabbi Tarfon's mishna - the day is short, the tasks great, the workers lazy..., remember that we are almost half way through the month of Elul. The day is truly short and the work is monumental to prepare for Yom HaDin, Rosh HaShana. But do not dispair, Rabbi Tarfon also said that although we cannot shy away from the tasks at hand, we need not complete the job. How can I do T'shuva for everything I should? Do your best. Piece by piece. Slowly, but surely.
