Now I will reveal the truth to you, Daniel. Three more kings will rule Persia and the fourth will exceed them all […]

Cyrus was the king after Darius the Mede (during whose reign the previous chapter occurred). In the third year of the reign of Cyrus, Daniel had a vision of the far future. Daniel was given a lot of information so that he would understand the vision (though he would only reveal a portion of what […]

Daniel – Chapter 9

September 4, 2013, by

In the first year of the reign of Darius the Mede, son of Ahasuerus (NOT the Ahasuerus of the Book of Esther), Daniel tried to calculate the end of the exile. (He wasn’t successful, though, because no one knew for sure when the seventy-year period began.) Daniel prayed to G-d, acknowledging that the people had […]

Daniel had another vision during the reign of Belshazzar. In this vision, he was in the capital city Shushan, in the province of Eilam, at the river Ulai. He looked up and saw a ram standing by the river; both of the ram’s horns were tall, but one was taller than the other and the […]

This chapter occurs before chapter 6. Back in the day when Belshazzar was still king, Daniel had a dream in which he saw visions. He woke up and wrote down the main points, so he wouldn’t forget anything. From here, the Book is in the first person, since it is what Daniel wrote after his […]

Darius the Mede was 62 years old when he became king. Darius appointed 120 officials to help him in running the empire. There were three governors over them, of whom Daniel was one. Daniel excelled in his role, so the king considered appointing him prime minister, second only to himself. The other officers didn’t like […]

Daniel – Chapter 5

The next incident occurred during the reign of King Belshazzar, the grandson of Nebuchadnezzar. (The text calls Nebuchadnezzar his father, but it is not uncommon for Scripture to call a person’s grandfather his father. And don’t confuse Belshazzar with Belteshazzar, which was Daniel’s Babylonian name.) Belshazzar threw a feast for 1,000 of his officers and […]

Daniel – Chapter 4

Nebuchadnezzar’s letter continues: “I had a dream,” he wrote, “which frightened me out of my peaceful state. I summoned all my sorcerers and astrologers, but none of them could interpret my dream until Daniel arrived. Daniel (whom I renamed Belteshazzar, after the god called Bel) is filled with the spirit of the Living G-d and […]

Daniel – Chapter 3

August 29, 2013, by

Nebuchadnezzar had a giant golden image erected, probably an idol, though possibly of himself. (The image is described as sixty cubits high and six cubits wide, leading to the obvious question of how it was able to support its own weight. Apparently, the statue had a large base, made of gold taken from the Temple, […]

Daniel – Chapter 2

August 28, 2013, by

Nebuchadnezzar had a dream that greatly disturbed him. He summoned all his astrologers and sorcerers to interpret it for him. There was a wrinkle, however: the king had forgotten the dream, so he expected his advisors to tell him both the dream and its interpretation. “No problem,” said his advisors, “just tell us the dream […]
