Noach 6 – Shishi

September 28, 2013, by

Noach’s three sons were named Shem, Cham (Ham) and Yefes (Japheth). Cham’s son was named Canaan. (Clearly, this was some time later, as Canaan was not yet born while they were on the boat.) Noach planted a vineyard and made wine. On one occasion, he became drunk and undressed in his tent. His son Cham […]

Noach 7 – Shvii

September 28, 2013, by

Back in the day, everyone spoke one language. (This makes sense, as everyone was descended from the three sons of Noach.) The people settled in the Shinar valley in what would later become Babylonia. There, they had what they thought was a spectacular idea: they conspired to build a city with a tower that would […]

Bereshit – Rishon

September 15, 2013, by

In the beginning, G-d created Heaven and Earth, but the Earth was unformed. On the first day of Creation, G-d created light to separate between day and night. On the second day, G-d made the sky, to separate between what’s above and what’s below. On the third day, He gathered the waters on Earth together […]

Now the Torah recaps some high points of the Creation narrative, focusing on some details that weren’t provided in the overview. After G-d had created the Earth, the plants had not yet sprouted because He hadn’t yet caused it to rain. G-d brought a mist that watered the ground. Then, He formed man from the […]

Bereshit – Shlishi

September 15, 2013, by

G-d caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, during which He removed one of his ribs, which He fashioned into a woman. G-d brought the woman to the man, who called her “Isha” (woman) because she was taken from “Ish” (man). Because of this inseparable connection, a man will leave his parents’ home […]

Bereshit – R’vi’i

September 15, 2013, by

Since man had eaten from the Tree of Knowledge between good and evil, G-d could not permit him to also eat from the Tree of Life; this meant banishing him from the Garden. G-d placed angels of destruction and a flaming, rotating sword at the entrance to the garden, to bar entry. The man and […]

Bereshit – Chamishi

September 15, 2013, by

Lemech had two wives, Adah and Tzilah. Adah had two sons: Yaval, who started the art of nomadic herding, and Yuval, who perfected musical instruments. Tzilah’s son Tuval Kayin perfected weaponry. (“Tuval Kayin” could mean that he improved upon the work of Cain, i.e., people killing one another.) Tzilah’s daughter was Naamah (according to tradition, […]

Bereshit – Shishi

Lemech called his wives to tell them that he had accidentally killed both a man and a boy. (According to tradition, he had killed his ancestor Cain and his son, Tuval Kayin.) If Cain would be avenged seven times, Lemech said, then surely he would be avenged 77 times! (An alternative reading of 4:15 is […]

Bereshit – Sh’vi’i

September 15, 2013, by

Chanoch’s son was Methuselah (Mesushelach), who holds the record for oldest recorded lifespan (969 years). Methusaleh’s grandson was Noah (Noach), so named because his father predicted that he would bring relief and comfort to the world. (“Noach” is derived from “yenachameinu” – “he will comfort us.”) Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham (Cham) and Japheth […]

This chapter concludes the angel’s explanation of Daniel’s visions. At the end time, Michael (the “guardian angel” of Israel) will arise. There will be a time of unprecedented trouble, as never before. Israel will be saved and everything predicted in this Book will come to pass. Many (but not all) of those who have been […]
