Mikeitz – R’vi’i

November 23, 2013, by

The years of plenty ended and the years of famine began. All the neighboring lands were going hungry, but Egypt had plenty of food saved up for just this occasion. When the citizens of Egypt ran out of food, they complained to Pharaoh, who sent them to Yoseif. Yoseif opened up his store houses and […]

After three days, Yoseif let the brothers out of jail. He said, “You know what? I’m a nice guy. Instead of sending one of you to get your youngest brother while I keep the rest of you in prison, I’ll let all of you bring food back to your families while I keep just one […]

When Yoseif saw the brothers bring Binyamin before him, he instructed his attendants to prepare a banquet. The brothers were apprehensive when the guards escorted them to Yoseif’s home, where they would be dining. (Remember, their last encounter had not been so friendly!) They thought they were being arrested because of the money that had […]

Yoseif was so overcome by emotion, he had to step out to compose himself. He washed his face and rejoined his brothers for lunch. He was served separately from his brothers because the Egyptians found it unseemly to dine with foreigners. Yoseif had them seated in the order of their ages, which amazed the brothers. […]

Mikeitz – Haftarah

November 23, 2013, by

This is an haftarah that is rarely read (if ever), since the week we read Miketz in synagogue is almost invariably the week of Hanukkah, and we read the special haftarah for that occasion. The central story is well-known; soon after he becomes king, Solomon is asked to judge between two women (“zonot” in the […]

Noach 1 – Rishon

September 28, 2013, by

Noach (Noah) was a righteous person in an otherwise corrupt generation. The depravity ran the gamut from theft and violence to idolatry and adultery. G-d spoke to Noach about His plans to eradicate mankind, which was thoroughly incorrigible. He instructed Noach to build an ark, whose dimensions and manner of construction He communicated. G-d would […]

Noach 2 – Sheini

September 28, 2013, by

Noach had been instructed to gather one pair of every non-kosher animal and seven pairs of every kosher animal. (That’s fourteen Guernsey cows and fourteen gazelles, not two or seven. Lots of people miss that.) He was also instructed to take seven pairs of each bird. Noach was 600 years old when he accomplished all […]

Noach 3 – Shlishi

September 28, 2013, by

The flood raged for forty days. It covered the mountains and tossed the ark around. Everything on Earth perished except for the people and animals that were safely ensconced inside the ark. It may have rained for a “mere” 40 days, but the waters continued to churn for 150. At that time, G-d gave special […]

Noach 4 – Revii

September 28, 2013, by

G-d told Noach to take his family and the animals out of the ark. The animals were to be released to breed and replenish their populations, minus those surplus kosher animals that Noach had brought to offer as sacrifices of thanks to G-d. Noach’s actions pleased G-d, Who said that He no longer curse the […]

Noach 5 – Chamishi

September 28, 2013, by

G-d forged a pact with Noach and his descendants, as well as with the animals and birds of the world. He committed not to strike the world with a universal flood ever again. As a sign of this commitment, G-d placed His rainbow in the clouds. The rainbow serves as a reminder that, while He […]
