During his tenure as Orthodox Union Executive Vice President, Rabbi Dr. Tzvi Hersh Weinreb made constant visits to the OU West Coast Region -- not only to Los Angeles, but throughout the region, serving as scholar-in-residence, strengthening the relationships between the OU member synagogues and the national organization. Now, as Executive Vice President, Emeritus, Rabbi Weinreb will be engaging in his most ambitious visit yet, with an agenda that will show the full range of his “vast reservoir of knowledge,” when he returns to Los Angeles from Thursday, March 10-Sunday, March 13.
Rabbi Alan Kalinsky, OU West Coast Director, declared, “Each of the events during Rabbi Weinreb's trip showcases his expertise -- his vast reservoir of knowledge -- to a different segment of our community. On Thursday, he will be delivering a lecture at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on “Jewish Values in Patient Care.” Over Shabbat he will serve as the scholar-in-residence at Young Israel of North Beverly Hills, and will culminate with a special evening with members of the OU Trustee Society. On Sunday, he will be the keynote speaker at the OU West Coast Regional Youth Professionals Summit, a conference that brings together synagogue youth professionals, rabbis and lay leaders from around our region.”
Rabbi Weinreb will launch his visit on Thursday, March 10 exploring the Jewish view of patient care as part of The Rabbi Levi Meier Ph.D. Memorial Lecture series at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, 8700 Beverly Boulevard. The program begins at noon. Rabbi Levi Meier was for years the beloved chaplain at Cedars-Sinai, and a strong supporter of the Orthodox Union and NCSY.
The Young Israel of North Beverly Hills will host Rabbi Weinreb as scholar-in-residence from Friday, March 11-Saturday, March 12, Parshat Vayikra.
During Shabbat morning services, he will discuss “Belief in God and Belief in Man in a Difficult World,” followed by lunch and his second presentation, “My Visit with Pope Benedict XVI: What I Said and What He Said.” At seudat shlishit, which begins at 5:30 p.m., Rabbi Weinreb will present “What Can Be Done About Polarization in Jewish Life?”
On Saturday night, March 12 at 7:30 p.m. a gathering of the OU Trustee Society will be hosted by Dr. Steve & Linda Tabak, at which Rabbi Weinreb will discuss “What is the the Mesorah? Challenges to the Mesorah Through the Ages and Down to Our Own Day.”
On Sunday, March 13, Rabbi Weinreb will discuss “The Halachic and Psychological Importance of Youth Work," followed by a Question and Answer session, during the First Annual Youth Professionals Summit at the OU West Coast offices in Los Angeles, 9831 W. Pico Blvd. The day will share expert advice, best practices and programming ideas that bring together the best of what can be offered regarding youth development within synagogue life.
According to Rabbi Adir Posy, Assistant Director of OU West Coast Community and Synagogue Services, “At the OU West Coast Regional Office, we pride ourselves on the ability to connect our constituent communities to the world-class resources that the OU has available. Rabbi Weinreb is truly such a resource and his trip to Southern California is truly a chance to make available his scholarship to a wide variety of demographics.”
