January 07, 2009 Operation Cast Lead: The Faces of War By Abba Richman 25 Comments
![]() View Slideshow These are the images from the war - these are the faces of war. The volunteer activity was giving out food, hot coffee, goodies, thermal vests, neck warmers, underwear, deodorant, toothpaste, socks etc. etc. to front line troops. We had a mobile kiosk and all the items were purchased from donations. The two units we visited were an Artillery Battery of Regular Army troops and the front line command of the southern sector of the Gaza Strip. You can see how appreciative the soldiers were and it made us feel very happy being able to add a little comfort to their field conditions. The first group of photos are of the group buying food in Sderot for the soldiers. There is a photo of citizens in a shelter - there were two "Red Color" alarms whilst we were there. I thank David Landau of Efrat and his organization: "Standing Together" who are doing tremendous Chessed giving out goodies to IDF soldiers and allowing me to accompany them on a trip to IDF front line forces. These are the images from the war - these are the faces of war. These are the boys and girls, the men and women, defending our right to peace, defending our home. I don't photograph glorious sunsets, flowers, animals and beautiful things (or people). I find myself again and again looking at ordinary everyday objects, at garbage, at the man in the street, looking at things really close up and trying to find beauty in their colour and form. Sometimes I find that beauty, more often I don’t. Now and then I am satisfied with what I have photographed, occasionally very satisfied and sometimes… well, I just start again and continue looking. In my search I thank God for giving me the eyes to see. To view more of Abba Richman’s photographs and contact him, visit www.abbarichman.com
