The
Silver Spice Box
By Varda Branfman
The silver spice box stood at the back of our mahogany
sideboard. The box was tarnished, and the flag up top was bent
over. As a child of six or seven, I would sit at the dining room
table and spin the flag as I pictured the tiny princess who
lived behind those silver filigree walls.

Q. Which
brothers are linked by an animal?
(Check Vai-chi and Vzot HaBracha)
A. A.Even though the main animal in Yehuda's bracha
is the lion, donkeys are also mentioned. This links
Yehuda to Yissachar.
In Vzot HaBracha, Dan's bracha mentions a lion,
linking him with Yehuda also. |

It
Wasn't How it Seemed
You may be certain that things are just the way you
think — but Rebbetzin Samet shows that it isn’t always
so. This collection of charming stories illustrates how
easy it is to be mistaken. But more important, she shows
us how easy it is to see the good in people.

Neuroscience and
Religion
By Haim Watzman
As an Orthodox Jew and a science writer, I
have the unhappy task of breaking some bad news to my
fellow-believers of all religions. If you thought evolution was
a threat to God, wait until you hear the latest. Brain
scientists are getting close to being able to explain our moral
choices by charting chemicals in our heads.

On
the 69th Anniversary of My
Bar Mitzvah
This past August, I celebrated the 69th anniversary of my bar
mitzvah. As I stood before the congregation to commemorate the
occasion, it seemed not that long ago that I had stood, quite a
bit shorter, amidst a similar, yet vastly different,
congregation.

Take Five for Torah Program
|
We sometimes mistake
a statement for the truth because what
is said "applies" so well. We must be
aware, however, that almost anything can
be made to apply to anything.
Remembering this we might be better able
to judge what is only made to apply, and
what, indeed does apply.
