As with all cakes, the dough is
considered the primary ingredient and only
Mezonot is necessary (Mishnah
Berurah 212:1), even if there is less
dough than apple, and even if the cake is eaten mainly because
of the apple. On the other hand, if there is merely a thin
strip of dough, which is intended just to help you handle all
the apple, the dough becomes subordinate to the apple and only
Ha-aytz need be said. |

Provided the dough consisted
of flour, water, and salt before baking (see
Aruch Hashulchan,

who considers bagels to be like regular bread). However,
Mezonot is
required for those bagels made of dough which also contain eggs,
honey, or butter (Aruch

|
Buckwheat is not a kind of wheat,
nor is it even one of the Five Principal Species. It is a
legume. Therefore, neither Mezonot
nor Hamotzi
can be
said over a product of buckwheat unless one of the Five
Principal Species, such as wheat flour, even only in part, has
been added to it. Thus, if you eat buckwheat alone,
only Ha-adamah is said (see
Igrot Moshe, Orach Chaim 65). |

Many soups require two
brachot—one for the liquid and one
for the solid ingredient—since neither part of the soup may be
considered subordinate to the other. Barley soup, for
example, requires
Mezonot for the barley and
Shehakol for the
liquid. However, it is preferable, where possible, first to say
Mezonot
over another food requiring it, and to have the barley in mind
at the same time. Similarly, it is preferable to say
Shehakol over
another food requiring it, with the intention of covering also
the soup liquid. However, if this procedure would create
any difficulties, and the soup is not to be eaten as part of a
meal, both brachot
should be said (see Igrot Moshe,
Orach Chaim 69).
Ha-adamah is required for
soup or
water in which a vegetable such as
beans, peas, beets, cabbage, etc., was cooked, even after the
vegetable was removed and only its taste remains (see
Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 205b
and Mishnah
Berurah, ibid., 9).
However, only Shehakol
should be said for a soup that is so liquid that 1) any flour
content is negligible, and 2) the entire soup could be drunk (Mishnah
Berurah, 208:23). |

Apple Sauce |
Shehakol |
 |
| |
Shehakol is to
be said because both the shape of the fruit as well as the color
of the apple (by the addition of sugar) have been
changed. This applies mostly to commercially
available canned or bottled apple sauce. However,
Ha-aytz
applies for homemade apple sauce in which
the color of the apple has not been changed (decision of Hagaon
Rav Moshe Feinstein). |

Ice Cream |
Shehakol |
 |
| |
Even if ice cream is eaten on a
cone, only
Shehakol is necessary, since the cone
is eaten only because of the ice cream and is clearly
subordinate to it. Its purpose is actually not so much to
be eaten as to hold the ice cream and to prevent the hands from
becoming soiled (see Shulchan Aruch,
Orach Chaim 212b; Mishnah Berurah 212:5, Kaf Hachaim 15).
However, if you specifically use a sugar cone because you
enjoy eating it,
Mezonot must also
be said before eating the cone. |
