OU Criticizes New York State Action Regarding Same Sex Marriage
May 30, 2008
For Immediate Release
ORTHODOX UNION OPPOSES NEW YORK STATE’S ACTIONS REGARDING RECOGNITION OF SAME SEX MARRIAGE

Today, the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America - the nation's largest Orthodox Jewish umbrella organization - expressed its opposition to actions ordered by Governor David Paterson that will lead New York State government to recognize same sex marriages performed out of state, even though same sex marriage is illegal under New York law.

Nathan J. Diament, director of public policy for the UOJCA stated:

Governor Paterson endangers the special status of marriage and family in society. Jewish tradition has always recognized the sanctity and special nature of the institution of marriage, and that only the relationship between a man and a woman can be considered marriage. Moreover, Judaism teaches that the institution of marriage is central to the formation of a healthy society and the raising of children.

We call on Governor Paterson to cease implementation of this order until the voters of New York make known their determination the issue.
