ORTHODOX UNION COMMENDS NEW JERSEY RELIGIOUS ACCOMMODATION LAWS
Four Bills to Require Reasonable Accommodation of Religious Needs

Today, the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, the nation's largest Orthodox Jewish umbrella organization, applauded the signing by NJ Governor Jon Corzine of four bills dealing with religious accommodation.

The bills will require reasonable accommodation of religious needs relating to emergency medical care, licensing exams, tests in colleges and universities and time off from work for religious needs. They were supported by a wide and diverse range of faith groups and community organizations, including the Orthodox Union.

UOJCA Director of Public Policy Nathan Diament stated:

We are grateful to Governor Corzine for signing these and special thanks to Assemblyman Gary Schaer, the prime sponsor for his untiring efforts to see these bills become law. No New Jerseyan should be forced to choose between faith and livelihood. These bills make sure they never will.
