OU Denounces UN
Resolution on Fence
The Union of Orthodox Jewish
Congregations of America, the nation’s largest Orthodox Jewish synagogue
organization, today expressed its outrage at the passage of the United
Nations General Assembly resolution to send the issue of Israel’s security
fence to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague for an
advisory opinion on its legality under international law. This not only
harms Israel’s fight against terrorism, but undermines the integrity of
The Hague. Though efforts to pass this type of resolution in the Security
Council were thwarted, this resolution was passed by the General Assembly
as another example of the plethora of anti-Israel resolutions emanating
from the GA.
The fence is an Israeli effort to try and foil the infiltration of
terrorists who have claimed more than 800 Israeli lives in the past three
years. The fact that the United Nations chooses to continue to isolate
Israel in a continuous barrage of anti-Israel resolutions, to the point of
even undermining the credibility of the ICJ, is another sad example of the
UN failing to live up to its Charter and raison d’etre. The ICJ must not
be abused by those who try to misuse it to seek their own political gains.
There may be many negative repercussions on Israel as a result of this
resolution and, if the ICJ continues to be misused as a political weapon,
many other countries may be affected as well and the cause of
international justice and peace will not be served.
