OU Protests Passage of UN Security
Council Resolution on the Road Map
The Orthodox Union expresses grave concern at the
passage of a United Nations Security Council resolution that would give
approval to the road map peace process in the Middle East. Despite strong
Israeli objections, Russia introduced the draft with the backing of
several other Security Council members.
Betty Ehrenberg, Director of International and Communal Affairs of the
OU’s Institute for Public Affairs, said, “We deplore this effort to bring
the road map to the United Nations. This is an effort to put undue
pressure on the State of Israel and to impose a Middle East solution by
the UN, which will no doubt be used as a tool for more anti-Israel
activity. The resolution makes no mention of Israel’s fourteen
reservations about the road map and its concerns about Palestinian
commitment to dismantle the terrorist infrastructure. To date, UN
statements and resolutions have only served to condemn Israel, not to
serve the interests of a true peace. A true peace can only be forged
between two willing parties who are genuinely interested in the formation
of a real peace – it cannot be imposed by the UN. It is regrettable that
once again, the UN has passed yet another resolution that will only
undermine chances for lasting Middle East peace.”
