Orthodox Union Appalled at Inclusion of Haider party
in Austrian Government
After Urging Klestil to Exclude Ultranationalists

January 31, 2000

President Thomas Klestil
President of Austria

Via Fax: 011-43-1-53-56-512

Dear President Klestil,

On behalf of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, the largest mainstream Orthodox Jewish organization in North America comprised of nearly one thousand synagogues, we are writing to express our dismay at the possible participation of Jorg Haider and his Freedom Party in the coalition as the new government is formed in Austria. Given the pronouncements and opinions that Mr. Haider has expressed in his capacity as leader of the right wing Freedom Party, Mr. Haider’s participation in this government would greatly undermine Austria’s role and standing in Europe and on the global stage. The ultra nationalist Freedom Party has made numerous statements legitimizing Nazi policies and activity and has blamed Austria’s ills on foreigners and the immigrant community. We view these policies as undermining the democracy, tolerance, and inclusivity that characterize modern Europe.

President Klestil, we respectfully urge you to serve as a courageous example to the Austrian people and to other world governments by not including Mr. Haider and his Freedom Party in the Austrian government. Austria cannot support and promote xenophobic and racist policies as reflected by Jorg Haider’s infamous comments that have characterized his career.

Sincerely,

Mandell I. Ganchrow, MD
