Yesterday, the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, the
nation's largest Orthodox Jewish umbrella organization joined with
other concerned groups in a letter to the Federal Communications
Commission requesting that the FCC hold a formal hearing to review the
television industry's proposed rating system for TV programs.
The letter expresses the concern that the proposed system, one which
rates programs by age suitability rather than discloses their level of
violence, profanity or sexual content, "does not address the needs of
parents."
"A full and fair review of the industry's proposal is critical for such
an important system that has great potential to assist parents in
monitoring and controlling what influences their children are exposed to
by television programs," said Nathan Diament, director of the Orthodox
Union's Institute for Public Affairs.
