From: Richard Stone, Nathan J. Diament
May 10, 2004 – This week, the United States Senate will consider:
Senate
Bill 1248 – the Reauthorization of the Individuals with
Disabilities Education Act
WE URGE
YOU TO CONTACT YOUR SENATORS IMMEDIATELY AND RELAY TO THEM THE
IMPORTANCE OF PASSING S. 1248 AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. PLEASE CONVEY
TO THEM THAT:
1. The
language in this bipartisan bill – drafted by Senators Judd
Gregg (R-NH) and Ted Kennedy (D-MA) -- considerably strengthens
the procedures by which students with disabilities placed by their
parents in non-public schools may receive federally-funded
services which address their disabilities.
2. If IDEA is
to be implemented during the next school year, prompt Senate
action is necessary including final passage and the appointment of
conferees.
Note that
since the House and Senate have developed different IDEA
reauthorization bills, a conference committee will need to work
out the differences before a bill can be signed by the President.
Please
e-mail, fax or telephone a message to your Senators. Regular mail
is still being diverted for screening before it can be delivered
to Capitol Hill, so do not use this method.
Fax numbers
and e-mail addresses for individual Senators can be found at
www.senate.gov
by using the "Find Your Senators" feature.
Thank you
for letting your Senators know of the importance of S.1248 to
students with disabilities in our schools. Hearing from you will
be important to the passage of this legislation.
