April 4, 2000 To: Officers, Rabbis, Synagogue Leadership From: Richard B. Stone, Chairman Betty Ehrenberg, Director, International and Communal Affairs Re: Call for Continuing Tefilot on Behalf of Arrested Iranian Jews IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED As you know, the 13 Iranian Jews falsely accused of spying for Israel and the United States were arrested and imprisoned nearly a year ago. Three have been released on bail and ten are still being held in jail. The Orthodox Union is calling on all its member synagogues, rabbis and synagogue leaders to increase the prayer and tehilim services on behalf of these Jews who were arrested on trumped-up charges and who remain in great danger. Public and street demonstrations are not called for at this time. We are calling for tefilot on Wednesday, erev Rosh Chodesh Nissan, for Yom Kippur Katan services and for special tefilot and Tehilim to be recited for this Shabbat. Among the recommended chapters of Tehilim are 130, 121, 20, 120, and 142. May Hashem hear our prayers and bring about the swift return of our brothers to their families. The names of the captives are: Asher ben Saltana Naser ben Poran Farhad ben Hamedam Ramin ben Minzal Javid ben Mochtaram Navid Navir Balazadeh Nejat Beruchim Faramarz Kashi Farzad Kashi Danni Tefilin Omid Tefilin Ramin Neamati Shahrokh Paknahad As the situation in Iran involving the 13 Jews is very delicate and things may change abruptly, we will continue to keep you apprised of new developments in a timely manner. Please call (212) 613-8124 with any questions you may have. -30-
