The baby is passed from the women's section (the mother) to the men's section (the father).

Because of the preciousness of the mitzvah, the custom is to invite many people to participate in its performance. The shoshvinin are a married couple who bring the child from his mother to the place of the mitzvah. The child's mother hands the infant to the woman, who then carries him to where the men are gathered. The man then takes the child from her, and carries him to where the brit will be performed.
