As part of its ongoing programmatic outreach to its burgeoning Upper West Side Orthodox community, which has seen a large increase in young families, Congregation Ohab Zedek (OZ), at 118 West 95th Street, in conjunction with the Orthodox Union, will present a series of three free monthly seminars focusing on the needs of parents with young children. The sessions, beginning Sunday, November 20, are part of the OU’s highly successful Positive Jewish Parenting series.

“With the extraordinary number of baby carriages and strollers in our community, it became clear to us that advice to parents of young children would be very well received in our synagogue, and so we turned to the OU, which is the leader in developing and presenting parenting programs,” declared Rabbi Allen Schwartz and President Reuben Taub of OZ. “This is part of OZ’ service to our membership as well as to the Jewish community on the West Side, and we are grateful for the OU’s assistance in rendering this service.”

OZ is an Orthodox Union member synagogue. Positive Jewish Parenting is a national program of the OU’s Department of Community and Synagogue Services, for member synagogues.

“The programs address day-to-day concerns of parents. The presenters, all mental health professionals from the Orthodox community, emphasize practical suggestions that enhance parenting skills,” declared Frank Buchweitz, OU Director of Community Services and Special Projects, and coordinator of national Positive Jewish Parenting programs.

At 9:45 a light breakfast precedes each of the three programs, with the sessions beginning at 10:00 a.m. and ending at 11:15 a.m. There will be ample time for interactive discussion in which questions will be addressed with specific suggestions and ideas from the presenters.

The scheduled sessions include:

  • Sunday, November 20, 2005
Early Childhood: Getting Your Child Off to a Good Start, with Marcy Schaffer, Ph.D.

  • Sunday, December 4, 2005
Setting Limits for Children, with Marlene Greenspan, MA, LPC

  • Sunday, January 8, 2005
A Parent’s Guide to Understanding, Teaching and Enjoying Their 2-5-Year-Old, with Annette Berger, Psy.D.
