Union
of Orthodox Jewish Congregations Expresses
Disappointment with Israeli Supreme Court
Ruling Allowing Razing of Gaza Synagogues
Today, leaders of the Union of
Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America -- the nation's largest
Orthodox Jewish umbrella organization -- expressed deep disappointment
with the ruling of Israel's High Court of Justice allowing the Israeli
government to destroy the synagogues of Gaza contrary to the Jewish
legal opinion of Israel's Chief Rabbinate.
The Union had written to the High Court last week urging that it defer
to the Chief Rabbinate's view on the matter out of respect for the
Jewish religious law which governs these sanctified sites and out of
concern for the precedent that allowing houses of worship to be razed
due to threats by a hostile population would set for the world Jewish
community.
