Orthodox Union President Stephen
J. Savitsky and Executive Vice President Rabbi Dr. Tzvi Hersh Weinreb
will serve as Scholars-in-Residence for the Miami Beach/ South Florida
Jewish community on Friday night, January 6 - Saturday January 7,
Parshat Vayigash, to be followed by a seminar with Rabbi Weinreb and OU
staff for pulpit rabbis on Monday, January 9.
These events will take place at Beth Israel Congregation, 770 West 40th
Street, and Young Israel of Miami Beach, 4221 Pine Tree Drive.
“It is important for our community to see the leadership of Stephen
Savitsky, the scholarship of Rabbi Weinreb, and the hashkafa (religious
outlook) of the Orthodox Union. The OU offers many programs and a large
presence to the American Jewish community that we would like to make our
community more aware of,” declared Rabbi Neil Turk of Beth Israel
Congregation.
According to Rabbi Donald Bixon of Young Israel of Miami Beach, “Mr.
Savitsky is a dedicated and committed leader, interested in further
expanding the services of the Orthodox Union nationally, as well as in
bringing programs to South Florida. Rabbi Weinreb is one of the greatest
thinkers in United States today, and any opportunity to hear him speak
is not to be missed.”
Scholars-in-Residence Program
This event is open to the entire South Florida community, with a $26
admission (payable in advance) for those participating in the Friday
night meal.
The schedule is as follows:
· Friday night, 8:30 p.m. at Beth Israel Congregation, with Mr. Savitsky
and Rabbi Weinreb speaking on: How a Polarized Community Can and Must
Work Together.
· Saturday at Young Israel of Miami Beach:
1. In the morning, with Mr. Savitsky speaking on: Jewish Renaissance In
Germany: Is It Good For The Jews?
2. In the evening at Seudah Shlishis, with Rabbi Weinreb speaking on The
Brothers: Reminders and Remainders of Mechirat Yosef (the selling of
Joseph).
· Saturday at Beth Israel Congregation:
1. In the morning, Rabbi Weinreb on: The Leader: Are We Indeed A
Leaderless Generation?
2. 4:00 p.m. with Rabbi Weinreb on: The Outcast (a student with an
alcohol or substance abuse problem): Can We Expel Him From Our Schools?
3. 5:30 p.m., Mr. Savitsky on: Unity Among Orthodox Jews – Is it Worth
the Effort?

Rabbinical Seminar: Monday, January 9 from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m.
This event is for pulpit rabbis in the South Florida region and will be
held at the Young Israel of Miami Beach, with Rabbi Weinreb speaking on:
Perspectives on Synagogue Leadership: Halachic, Hashkafic and
Psychological Considerations. The presentation will be followed by a
luncheon at Tower 41, 4101 Pine Tree Drive, with Rabbi Weinreb; Frank
Buchweitz, OU Director of Community Services and Special Projects; and
Rabbi Mayer Waxman, OU Director of Synagogue Services.
