An OU National Program Comes to
Woodmere:
Positive Parenting Conference To Focus On Raising Teenagers
Young Israel of Woodmere
Saturday, December 4
859 Peninsula Blvd Woodmere
On-site registration begins at 7 p.m.
An interactive evening focused on practical
parenting skills for teenagers will be held at the Young Israel of
Woodmere on Saturday, December 4 from 7 – 11 p.m. as part of the
Orthodox Union’s highly successful Positive Jewish Parenting program.
Positive Parenting workshops have been held all over the country. Each
program is specially tailored to its host community. “Workshop topics
are developed in consultation with community synagogues to reflect and
address the specific communal needs,” explained Rabbi Moshe D. Krupka,
Executive Director of Programming. Among the most popular sessions
requested have been “Setting Limits for Children,” “Responding to
Anger,” “Sibling Rivalry,” “Oppositional Behavior,” and “Maximizing
Children’s Potential.”
The program in Woodmere will feature experts in child and adolescent
psychology who will give numerous workshops specifically focusing on
raising teenagers.
Workshops include:
- “Growing Together and Not Apart – Enhancing the
Emotional, Academic and Behavioral Development of Your Teen,” with Dr.
Aviva Biberfeld;
- “Developing Healthy Attitudes toward Teenage
Relationships, Dating and Marriage,” with Dr. Norman Blumenthal;
- “Installing Healthy Values in an Age of
Materialism,” with Dr. Rona Novick;
- “Addressing the Impact of TV, Movies, Internet,
Video Games, and Other Media,” with Dr. David Pelcovitz; and
- “How to Talk So Your Teenagers Listen and How
to Listen So Your Teenagers Talk,” with Nosson Westreich, M.D., FRCPC.

“Raising a teenager in this day and age is a great challenge with many
complex issues,” declared Frank Buchweitz, OU Director of Special
Projects and the coordinator of its parenting programs. “The workshops,
presented by experts in parent/teen interaction, will be ‘how-to’
lessons on coping with these issues.”
In an ongoing effort to address timely and relevant issues impacting
upon families in today’s society, the OU initiated Positive Jewish
Parenting workshops and conferences for communities and synagogues
throughout the country. Daily issues and challenges facing parents and
children in the mainstream (not children at risk) on either the
elementary or high school levels are addressed in interactive sessions.
To promote optimal growth for children and families, professionals in
the areas of psychiatry, psychology, and social work provide practical
ideas and suggestions in the workshops. In addition to the educational
information, programs focus on the unique needs of the Orthodox
community.
The Orthodox Union, now in its second century of
service to the Jewish community of North America and beyond, is a world
leader in community and synagogue services, adult education, youth work
through NCSY, political action through the IPA, and advocacy for persons
with disabilities through Yachad and Our Way. Its kosher supervision
label, the
, is the world’s
most recognized kosher symbol and can be found on over 275,000 products
manufactured in 68 countries around the globe.
