Westchester’s Oldest Synagogue
to Honor its Rabbi
for 50 Years of
Service
Westchester’s oldest synagogue, Congregation
Brothers of Israel, an Orthodox Union-member synagogue, will honor Rabbi
Dr. Solomon Freilich for his 50 years of service as its spiritual
leader.
A jubilee celebration for Rabbi Freilich will be held on Sunday, October
24 at 3:00 p.m. A program of tribute will take place at the synagogue
located at 116 Crary Avenue, followed by the dinner at the “Y” of Mt.
Vernon at 30 Oakley Avenue.
OU Executive Vice President Rabbi Tzvi Hersh Weinreb and Rabbi Menachem
Genack, head of the OU Kosher Department, will be among the speakers at
the jubilee celebration.
Rabbi Freilich first served as the rabbi of Congregation Anshe Sholom in
New Rochelle, holding that position from 1948 until 1953, when he came
to Congregation Brothers of Israel. He has therefore been a leader of
the Westchester Jewish community for 56 years. For the past decade he
has served as the President of the Westchester Rabbinic Council.
Rabbi Freilich made his mark on the rabbinic world when in the 1950s and
1960s he established close contacts with Jewish leaders in European
countries, most notably Lord Rabbi Dr. Immanuel Jacobovits, Chief Rabbi
of England; Chief Rabbi Rosen of Romania; and Chief Rabbi Levin of the
former Soviet Union. For this work the congregation lauds Rabbi Freilich
as “deeply committed to helping Jews everywhere,” and adds that “he has
been ever-responsive to the material, spiritual, and emotional needs of
the countless who call upon him daily.”
At 22, Rabbi Freilich received rabbinic ordination from Rabbi Yitzchok
Hutner, Rosh Yeshiva of the Rabbinical Academy, Mesivta Chaim Berlin.
Rabbi Freilich continued his Torah study under Rabbi Dr. Joseph
Soloveitchik, one of the foremost Torah scholars of this generation.
They enjoyed a long and close association.
Rabbi Freilich holds two master’s degrees in Social Work and Gerontology
and Pastoral Counseling, as well as a Ph.D. in Biblical commentary, all
from Yeshiva University.
