More Details
Featuring discussions led by some of the world’s most
eminent authorities on the laws of keeping kosher, the Ask
Program of the
Kashrut (Kosher) Division of the Orthodox Union will present A Seminar
on Grape Juice and Wine: A Discussion of Contemporary Halachic Issues,
on Sunday, March 14 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m at the Young Israel of
Flatbush. The synagogue is located at 1012 Avenue I, at Coney Island
Avenue, in Brooklyn.
The program is open to both men and women. Admission is free.
Ask
is presented periodically by the Kosher Division to explore significant
issues of Jewish kosher law (halacha). According to Rabbi Yosef
Grossman, Director of Ask
, the program is
being held at a most opportune time, following Purim and in the period
leading to Passover. Purim this year falls on March 7; Passover begins
with the first seder on April 5.
“We have scheduled the program for a time when the kosher consumer is
very much concerned with questions of kashrut regarding wine and grape
juice,” Rabbi Grossman explained. “The number of wines for the Passover
table continues to proliferate. At the same time, children at the seder
and adults who may be unable to drink wine, perhaps because of
medications they are taking, will use grape juice as an alternative.
This program, therefore, will deal with the intricacies of the laws of
both wine and grape juice.”
The program includes:
- Greetings by Rabbi Kenneth Auman, Rabbi of the
Young Israel of Flatbush and President of the Rabbinical Council of
America;
- Using Grape Juice for the Four Kosot (Cups)
with Rabbi Menachem Genack, OU Kashrut Rabbinic Administrator;
- Grape Juice From Concentrate – Its Bracha
(Blessing) and Use for Kiddush and the Four Kosot, with Rabbi Yisroel
Belsky, OU Halachic Consultant;
- Is Grape Juice Considered Wine? with Rabbi
Zevulun Charlop, the Menahel (Dean) of Yeshivat Rabbeinu Yitzchok
Elchanan (RIETS) of Yeshiva University;
- Non-Mevushal (cooked) Wine in Halacha, with
Rabbi Hershel Schachter, also an OU Halachic Consultant;
- An Halachic Discussion of Various Grape
Products, with Rabbi Dovid Cohen, OU Rabbinic Coordinator; and
- Practical Lessons in Kosher Wine Production,
with Philip Herzog, Vice President of Royal Wine Corp., manufacturers
of Kedem and Baron Herzog wines.
