Positive Jewish Parenting Workshops Return to ASHAR

ASHAR
70 Highview Road, Monsey

January 8 and February 12, 2005
7:45 p.m. – 10:45 p.m.

Sessions begin promptly at 8:00 p.m.

Two interactive evenings focused on strengthening practical parenting skills will be held at the Adolph Schreiber Hebrew Academy of Rockland (ASHAR) on Saturday evenings, January 8 and February 12 from 7:45 p.m. to 9:45 p.m.

Programs are presented by ASHAR and the East Ramapo Central School District, in conjunction with the national initiative of the Orthodox Union’s Positive Jewish Parenting series.

In addition to useful advice, ideas and suggestions impacting upon families, a question and answer session with the evening’s presenters as well as a dessert reception will be included both evenings.

The programs at ASHAR will feature both local and well-known mental health professionals who will present workshops specifically focusing on raising the elementary school-age child. As with the three previous Positive Jewish Parenting programs held at ASHAR, sessions will focus on the unique needs of the Orthodox community.

Workshops for January 9 will include:

  • “Children Learn What They Live: Parents as Role Models in Everyday Situations,” with David Rube, M.D., Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University; and
  • “Empowering Your Child to be Socially Successful,” with Aviva Schechter, Psy.D., who conducts psycho-educational assessments at the Learning Center in Riverdale and is a psychological consultant at SAR High School.

And, on February 12, the sessions will include:

  • “Instilling Monetary Values in Children in an Age of Materialism,” with Dr. David Pelcovitz, Professor of Education and Psychology at Yeshiva University’s Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education; and,
  • “Time Management for Our Children, Spouse, Family, and Self,” with Dr. Zina Rutkin, a clinical psychologist specializing in children and families.
  • “Raising an Orthodox child in this day and age is a great challenge with many complex issues,” declared Frank Buchweitz, OU Director of Special Projects and coordinator of the national parenting efforts. “The practical workshops will be ‘how-to’ lessons on addressing daily issues impacting upon families,” said Mr. Buchweitz.
