Long Beach Congregation Welcomes Jewish Deaf for
Orthodox Union Weekend
Congregation Lubavitch
3981 Atlantic Ave., Long Beach
January 7-8
Our Way, an Orthodox Union program for the deaf
and hearing impaired, together with Congregation Lubavitch of Long
Beach, is inviting Jewish deaf people and their families to a Shabbaton
(weekend) on January 7-8.
“The weekend promises to be an experience that is both informative and
educational,” said Rabbi Eliezer Lederfeind, the Director of Our Way.
According to Rabbi Lederfeind, highlights of the weekend will include
the presence of Mordechai Weis as the Deaf Scholar-in-Residence. Mr.
Weis, from New York City, is deaf and studied at Yeshiva Ner Israel
Rabbinical College in Baltimore. He is currently studying architectural
technology at City University of New York’s College of Technology.
Another highlight of the program will include an Israel Deaf Panel,
consisting of deaf participants who will share their opinions on Israeli
policy. Questions such as should Israel exchange land for peace; how
should Israel deal with terrorism; and should Israel disengage from
Gaza, will all be addressed.
Along with special programming, the Shabbaton will provide three
delicious meals and snacks; an interpreted synagogue service; a
beginner’s service; child care; and an opportunity to join together with
others from the deaf community to live and learn about Judaism.
To participate, send your application and check of $25 by January 4 to
Our Way California, c/o Lori Moore, 5521 Bluebell Ave., North Hollywood,
CA 91607. For more information, contact Ms. Moore at 818-509-7740 or
