Teaneck Hosts the OU’s Marriage Enrichment Program to Help Couples Make a Good Marriage a Great One

Saturday, December 18
8:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.
Congregation Bnai Yeshurun
641 West Englewood Ave, Teaneck

Turning a good marriage into a great marriage is the goal of the Orthodox Union’s Marriage Enrichment Seminar, which will take place Saturday, December 18 from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at Congregation Bnai Yeshurun in Teaneck. OU Marriage Enrichment Seminars, a national program, offer practical ideas, skills and suggestions for nurturing more fulfilling marriages, according to Frank Buchweitz, OU Director of Special Projects, who coordinates the marriage program.

Saturday’s program in Teaneck will feature Dr. Aviva Biberfeld, a family therapist, who will discuss a “Blueprint for a Healthy Marriage and … Expectations that Can Kill a Marriage.” Dr. David Pelcovitz, Professor of Education and Psychology at Yeshiva University’s Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education, will give insights on “How to Communicate More Effectively with Your Spouse.”

“The emphasis of this program is taking a healthy marriage and making it even better,” declared Mr. Buchweitz. “We focus on the positive aspects of marriage, highlighting characteristics found in happy couples.”

OU marriage enrichment programs offer couples an opportunity to focus on communication with one another, which Mr. Buchweitz says is a key element in successful marriages. “We teach people how to really talk about issues,” he explained. “But you can’t talk about things while they’re happening because people naturally become accusatory. We help people to set aside time to resolve issues that potentially can become conflicts.” The evening also offers socializing opportunities with other couples and the chance to discuss issues of common concern in small groups.

These features contribute to highly successful marriage programs that the OU has presented in Jewish communities across the country. “The true test, the response, has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Mr. Buchweitz. When the first Marriage Enrichment Retreat was held over a year ago, registration numbers exceeded expectations by 200 people, he added. “After the large turnout and the great reviews, we realized that this was a program that people found very helpful for synagogues and we wanted to extend it to as many communities as possible.”
